It has become increasingly clear in recent years that the international paediatric oncology community needs to develop ad hoc strategies to face the challenge of very rare tumours of childhood, a group of heterogeneous tumours whose common denominator lies in their having been orphan diseases for too many years. Various schemes have been recently activated to promote research in this uncharted territory, starting from the key point of joining forces and pooling resources, with the ultimate goal to improve the quality of patient care.
