De-escalating treatment in patients with breast cancer post-surgery
Icro Meattini, MD, University of Florence, Florence, Italy, comments on the current treatment strategies for patients after breast cancer surgery, highlighting the optimization of de-escalation of treatment. Currently, most patients receive post-operative radiation therapy, but various de-escalation strategies are being tested, such as partial breast irradiation, hypofractionation, and reduced fraction schedules. Dr Meattini notes that these strategies have shown a significant decrease in treatment burden, but further research is needed to identify which patients may safely omit radiotherapy.
