A measurement of eco-friendly, sustainable significance
It is estimated that by 2030, 25% of the world’s population will reside in areas not suitable for human life because of climate change and that the direct healthcare costs related to climate change will increase by $4 billion annualy.1,2 The healthcare system is indeed a major contributor to climate change; healthcare accounts for an estimated 8% to 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the United States (or 655 million tons of carbon dioxide [CO2] equivalents [CO2 eq] per year) and 25% (or 22.8 million tons of CO2 eq per year) in the United Kingdom.
