Mashup Score: 21A tobacco-free generation: the end goal of the endgame - 2 month(s) ago
Last year The Lancet Respiratory Medicine published an Editorial discussing how the tobacco endgame initiative could best establish a tobacco-free generation, in which less than 5% of the European population uses tobacco by 2040. A major goal to achieve this initiative will be to ensure that children and adolescents receive adequate help to avoid tobacco-related and nicotine-related products, in particular electronic nicotine delivery systems which are highly addictive.

Mashup Score: 43New Zealand reverses landmark tobacco controls - 4 month(s) ago
An “unconscionable blow to the health and wellbeing of all New Zealanders” Plans by the new government of New Zealand (Aotearoa) to abandon pioneering tobacco control measures have been condemned by the Māori health organisation Hāpai Te Hauora as an “unconscionable blow to the health and wellbeing of all New Zealanders.”1 The abandoned measures include progressively raising the legal age of sale for tobacco products to create a smoke-free generation, reducing retail outlets, and removing nicotine from tobacco products.23 Smoking is both uniquely lethal and a key driver of health inequality worldwide.4 In particular, tobacco related deaths have a substantial role in the persisting life expectancy gap between Māori and other New Zealand people.5 Much of the momentum for decisive action to eliminate tobacco smoking came from Māori leaders, who called for a return to the country’s original tupeka kore (tobacco-free) status.1 Tobacco was introduced by European colonists, so smoking and the

Mashup Score: 5Increasing prevalence of mental disorders in smokers seeking treatment of tobacco dependence: a retrospective observational study - BMC Psychiatry - 8 month(s) ago
Background There has been a noticeable relative increase in psychiatric comorbidities among smokers as opposed to the general population. This is likely due to comparatively slower decrease in smoking prevalence among individuals with mental health conditions. This study aims to assess the prevalence trend of past or current mental health disorders in individuals seeking specialized smoking cessation assistance. Methods We conducted a retrospective single-centre observational study to assess the presence of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, bipolar affective disorder, or schizophrenia in personal history of 6,546 smokers who sought treatment at the Centre for Treatment of Tobacco Dependence in Prague, Czech Republic between 2006 and 2019. The study examined the impact of gender, age, and the effect of successive years on the prevalence of the mental disorders using Poisson distribution regression. Results In the studied cohort, 1,743 patients (26.6%) reported having one or

Mashup Score: 2Rising number of countries are controlling tobacco but progress is slowing, WHO warns - 9 month(s) ago
More than 150 countries have now implemented one or more tobacco control measures—three times the 44 countries that had done so in 2007—but the pace of progress has been decelerating since 2018, the World Health Organization has said.1 The global tobacco epidemic report, which was supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, found that the number of countries with two or more control measures in place has increased almost 10 fold since 2007—from just 11 to over 100 countries. Additionally, 48 countries now have at least three policies in place. Since 2020, two more countries—Mauritius and the Netherlands—have achieved best practice across all tobacco control policies, something only Brazil and Turkey had previously accomplished. “WHO stands ready to support all countries to follow their example and …
