Mashup Score: 676Long COVID is associated with severe cognitive slowing - 2 day(s) ago
Background COVID-19 survivors may suffer from a wide range of chronic cognitive symptoms for months or years as part of post-COVID-19 conditions (PCC). To date, there is no definitive objective cognitive marker for PCC. We hypothesised that a key common deficit in people with PCC might be generalised cognitive slowing. Methods To examine cognitive slowing, PCC patients completed two short web-based cognitive tasks, Simple Reaction Time (SRT) and Number Vigilance Test (NVT). 270 patients diagnosed with PCC at two different clinics in UK and Germany were compared to two control groups: individuals who contracted COVID-19 before but did not experience PCC after recovery (No-PCC group) and uninfected individuals (No-COVID group). Findings We identified pronounced cognitive slowing in PCC patients, which distinguished them from age-matched healthy individuals who previously had symptomatic COVID-19 but did not manifest PCC. Cognitive slowing was evident even on a 30-second task measuring si

Mashup Score: 10“We weren’t that great at treating flu—it should not be our model for covid”: America’s covid-19 tsar speaks - 4 day(s) ago
Former US covid-19 response coordinator Ashish Jha tells The BMJ about antivirals, long covid, his worries for the winter season—and why the “partisanisation” of vaccination worries him Taking office in November 2021, US President Joe Biden was immediately confronted by the chaotic nature of his country’s reaction to covid-19. One of his first actions was to appoint a “covid-19 tsar”—someone who would oversee the response in a joined up manner, from testing and surveillance to access to vaccines and treatments to on-the-ground responses from doctors. Jeff Zients was first appointed and when he moved to become Biden’s chief of staff the president chose Ashish Jha, a long time public health expert and one of the loudest voices during the pandemic, to fill the role. Jha was in the post for 15 months, until the duties were absorbed into other parts of government. His tenure saw the US exit the state of emergency for covid-19 and face an mpox epidemic that has affected over 30 000 Americans

Introduction Prior reviews synthesized findings of studies on long-term cardiac complications of COVID-19. However, the reporting and methodological quality of these studies has not been systematically evaluated. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on long-term cardiac complications of COVID-19 and examined patterns of reported findings by study quality and characteristics. Methods We searched for studies examining long-term cardiac complications of COVID-19 that persisted for 4 weeks and over. A customized Newcastle–Ottawa scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the quality of included studies. Meta-analysis was performed to generate prevalence estimates of long-term cardiac complications across studies. Stratified analyses were further conducted to examine the prevalence of each complication by study quality and characteristics. The GRADE approach was used to determine the level of evidence for complications included in the meta-analysis. Results A total number of 150 s

“It can be a challenge to stay present, to not grieve what I have lost or bemoan what has befallen me. I take it, as the banal but truthful platitude goes, one day at a time,” writes CBC Radio Here & Now host Gill Deacon.

Mashup Score: 3143Covid-19 vaccine effectiveness against post-covid-19 condition among 589 722 individuals in Sweden: population based cohort study - 9 day(s) ago
Objective To investigate the effectiveness of primary covid-19 vaccination (first two doses and first booster dose within the recommended schedule) against post-covid-19 condition (PCC). Design Population based cohort study. Setting Swedish Covid-19 Investigation for Future Insights—a Population Epidemiology Approach using Register Linkage (SCIFI-PEARL) project, a register based cohort study in Sweden. Participants All adults (≥18 years) with covid-19 first registered between 27 December 2020 and 9 February 2022 (n=589 722) in the two largest regions of Sweden. Individuals were followed from a first infection until death, emigration, vaccination, reinfection, a PCC diagnosis (ICD-10 diagnosis code U09.9), or end of follow-up (30 November 2022), whichever came first. Individuals who had received at least one dose of a covid-19 vaccine before infection were considered vaccinated. Main outcome measure The primary outcome was a clinical diagnosis of PCC.
