Mashup Score: 11EAN Surveys - 3 month(s) ago
Surveys can be an excellent tool for collecting evidence on health practices, attitudes, and knowledge. However, conducting good survey research can be trickier than it looks. The European Academy of Neurology is pleased to offer scientific support throughout the whole process (e.g., design, set-up, dissemination). Partner societies are also welcome to share with us any new survey initiative. To streamline this procedure, ensure transparency, and maximize the impact of all surveys, the following policy

Mashup Score: 32Association of EEG Background and Neurodevelopmental Outcome in Neonates With Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Receiving Hypothermia - 5 month(s) ago
Background and Objectives Predicting neurodevelopmental outcome for neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is important for clinical decision-making, care planning, and parent communication. We examined the relationship between EEG background and neurodevelopmental outcome among children enrolled in a trial of erythropoietin or placebo for neonates with HIE treated with therapeutic hypothermia. Methods Participants had EEG recorded throughout hypothermia. EEG background was classified as normal, discontinuous, or severely abnormal (defined as burst suppression, low voltage suppressed, or status epilepticus) at 5 1-hour epochs: onset of recording, 24, 36, 48, and 72 hours after birth. The predominant background pattern during the entire continuous video EEG monitoring recording was calculated using the arithmetic mean of the 5 EEG background ratings (normal = 0; discontinuous = 1; severely abnormal = 2) as follows: “predominantly normal” (mean = 0), “normal/discontinuous” (

Mashup Score: 2Correlation Between Quantitative Background Suppression on... : Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology - 7 month(s) ago
udy enrolled patients with return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest from March 2010 to March 2020. The inclusion criteria were (1) older than the age of 16 years and (2) patients who had both EEG and NSE. The median time for EEG and NSE were 3 days (interquartile range 2–5 days) and 3 days (interquartile range 2–4 days), respectively. The quantification of background activity was conducted with the suppression ratio (SR). We used a machine learning (eXtreme Gradient Boosting algorithm) to evaluate whether the SR could improve the accuracy of prognostication. Results: We enrolled 151 patients. The receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed a cut-off value of serum NSE and the SR for poor outcome, serum NSE (>31.9 μg/L, area under curve [AUC] = 0.88), and the SR (>21.5%, AUC = 0.75 in the right hemisphere, >34.4%, AUC = 0.76 in the left hemisphere). There was a significant positive correlation between the severity of SR and the level of NSE (ρ = 0.57, p < 0.0001 fo

Mashup Score: 3EEG Correlates of Qualitative Hypermetabolic FDG-PET in Patients With Neurologic Disorders - 11 month(s) ago
Background and Objectives Case reports and case series have described fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET findings in critically ill patients with rhythmic or periodic EEG patterns, with one reporting that metabolic activity increases with increasing lateralized periodic discharge (LPD) frequency. However, larger studies examining the relationship between FDG-PET hypermetabolism and rhythmic or periodic…

Mashup Score: 1Intracerebral Correlates of Scalp EEG Ictal Discharges Based on Simultaneous Stereo-EEG Recordings - 11 month(s) ago
Background and Objectives It remains unknown to what extent ictal scalp EEG can accurately predict the localization of the intracerebral seizure onset in presurgical evaluation of drug-resistant epilepsies. In this study, we aimed to define homogeneous ictal scalp EEG profiles (based on their first ictal abnormality) and assess their localizing value using simultaneously recorded scalp EEG and…

Mashup Score: 0Development of Expert-Level Classification of Seizures and Rhythmic and Periodic Patterns During EEG Interpretation - 12 month(s) ago
Background and Objectives Seizures (SZs) and other SZ-like patterns of brain activity can harm the brain and contribute to in-hospital death, particularly when prolonged. However, experts qualified to interpret EEG data are scarce. Prior attempts to automate this task have been limited by small or inadequately labeled samples and have not convincingly demonstrated generalizable expert-level…
