Mashup Score: 23Scarlett McNally: Rethinking ageing can help the NHS recover - 5 month(s) ago
As a surgeon, I’m focused on the NHS’s huge waiting list for elective surgery and have written about how to improve it.1 But, given that only 13% of hospital bed days are used for elective surgery, this isn’t what’s depleting the NHS.2 I recently did seven different conference presentations in a week. The most effective was for a public event in Eastbourne about the health benefits of active travel, especially a slide of the chief medical officer’s new annual report3 showing places where over 25% of the population will be over 75 by 2043. We can’t afford the costs of our ageing population to healthcare, social care, and the economy unless we change our passive expectations of ageing. In the NHS, 70% of bed days are used by people aged over 65.2 But hospital stays …

Mashup Score: 2Research status and hotspots in the surgical treatment of tremor in Parkinson’s disease from 2002 to 2022: a bibliometric and visualization analysis - 6 month(s) ago
ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the research status and hotspots of surgical treatment for tremor in Parkinson’s disease (PD) from 2002 to 2022, utilizing bibliometric and visual analysis. Additionally, it aims to offer insights into future research trends in this field.MethodsThis study collected publications on the surgical treatment of tremor in PD from 2002 to 2022 using the Web of Science (WOS) database. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Scimago Graphica were employed to quantify the number of publications and analyze the bibliographic information networks, including the contributions of countries/cities, authors, keywords, and co-cited references.ResultsA total of 2,815 publications were included in the study, revealing that 541 scientific institutions experienced an increase in publications from 2002 to 2022. Michael Okun emerged as the most productive author, and the United States emerged as the leading hub for research. The study identified 772 keywords. Noteworthy citation bu

Mashup Score: 0Rapamycin reduces neuronal mutant huntingtin aggregation and ameliorates locomotor performance in Drosophila - 6 month(s) ago
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by movement and cognitive dysfunction. HD is caused by a CAG expansion in exon 1 of the HTT gene that leads to a polyglutamine (PQ) repeat in the huntingtin protein, which aggregates in the brain and periphery. Previously, we used Drosophila models to determine that Htt-PQ aggregation in the heart causes shortened lifespan and cardiac dysfunction that is ameliorated by promoting chaperonin function or reducing oxidative stress. Here, we further study the role of neuronal mutant huntingtin and how it affects peripheral function. We overexpressed normal (Htt-PQ25) or expanded mutant (Htt-PQ72) exon 1 of huntingtin in Drosophila neurons and found that mutant huntingtin caused age-dependent Htt-PQ aggregation in the brain and could cause a loss of synapsin. To determine if this neuronal dysfunction led to peripheral dysfunction, we performed a negative geotaxis assay to measure locomotor performance and found that neuro

Mashup Score: 5Brain volumetric changes in menopausal women and its association with cognitive function: a structured review - 6 month(s) ago
The menopausal transition has been proposed to put women at risk for undesirable neurological symptoms, including cognitive decline. Previous studies suggest that alterations in the hormonal milieu modulate brain structures associated with cognitive function. This structured review provides an overview of the relevant studies that have utilized MRI to report volumetric differences in the brain following menopause, and its correlations with the evaluated cognitive functions. We performed an electronic literature search using Medline (Ovid) and Scopus to identify studies that assessed the influence of menopause on brain structure with MRI. Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Brain volumetric differences have been reported most frequently in the frontal and temporal cortices as well as the hippocampus. These regions are important for higher cognitive tasks and memory. Additionally, the deficit in verbal and visuospatial memory in postmenopausal women has been associated with smal

Mashup Score: 4Resting-state prefrontal EEG biomarker in correlation with postoperative delirium in elderly patients - 6 month(s) ago
Postoperative delirium (POD) is associated with adverse outcomes in elderly patients after surgery. Electroencephalography (EEG) can be used to develop a potential biomarker for degenerative cerebral dysfunctions, including mild cognitive impairment and dementia. This study aimed to explore the relationship between preoperative EEG and POD. We included 257 patients aged >70 years who underwent spinal surgery. We measured the median dominant frequency (MDF), which is a resting-state EEG biomarker involving intrinsic alpha oscillations that reflect an idle cortical state, from the prefrontal regions. Additionally, the mini-mental state examination and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) were performed before surgery as well as 5 days after surgery. For long-term cognitive function follow up, the telephone interview for cognitive status™ (TICS) was performed 1 month and 1 year after surgery. Fifty-two (20.2%) patients were diagnosed with POD. A multivariable logistic regression analysis
