Neocortical Association Cell Types in the Forebrain of Birds and Alligators

The mesopallium is a large structure in the bird brain implicated in avian cognitive abilities. Briscoe et al. show that the mesopallium shares a transcription factor network with the neocortical intratelencephalic neurons of superficial and deep layers, suggesting that the core excitatory cell types of neocortical circuits are conserved in birds.
