Generative AI: ensuring transparency and emphasising human intelligence and accountability
The mission of The Lancet Group of journals is to publish the best science for better lives. We do this through a variety of activities that range from publishing cutting-edge research and putting it into context to health advocacy. The majority of these activities rely on the written word as the main way to assess, select, optimise, and disseminate information. From peer review to commentaries, there is no part of our work that does not rely on text. The innovation of large language models, a type of generative artificial intelligence (AI), which are able to generate reliable sounding language on any topic in science and medicine, therefore has the potential to drastically influence scientific publishing and The Lancet Group.
