Why Were My Arteries Clogged?

Dear readers,

I received many emails from my patients about an article in the Wall Street Journal about a case study of calcium score CT results in a 65-year-old man (why not at age 50?) and an ultimate diagnosis of sitosterolemia, a rare inherited condition treated with diet and ezetimibe. Two more articles on this condition are included, one of which warns against the use of plant sterol supplements as they may increase atherosclerosis. In addition, augmented nitric oxide production (beets, greens, pine nuts, watermelon) may defend against SARS-CoV-2. Last year a research team at the Cleveland Clinic warned us about dietary niacin and a new pathway of harm, but NHANES data says the opposite. Coffee supports longevity pathways. NR may be of value in COPD. Elevated homocysteine raises CVD risk which is why I check it in every patient. Finally, whole grain bread beats white bread for a lower cancer risk.

Be well,

Joel Kahn, MD, FACC
