Lipoprotein(a): The Heart's Quiet Killer

Dear readers,

Lipoprotein(a) is a hot topic, but one we have focused on in my clinic for over 10 years. A new and important study demonstrates that even when LDL-C is low, a high Lipoprotein(a) still matters. Statins raise Lipoprotein(a), which is a concern for sure. Alzheimer’s reduction with olive oil? Some research says yes. Vitamin D supplementation may have a role in blood pressure control. Who doesn’t love white button mushrooms? Your prostate does, too.

In addition, beta-blockers post-MI may lead to depression and may need to be stopped. Can heart disease be halted? A presentation I made says yes. Addressing fear in heart attack survivors is an important topic to discuss openly. Finally, plant-based diets have many therapeutic roles, but dietitians in the UK do not get it right. Eat food, not too much, mostly plants. I eat only plants for 48 years.

Be well,

Joel Kahn, MD, FACC

Looking at preclinical and preliminary human data, the City of Hope scientists found that taking white button mushroom pills reduces a class of immune cells called myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), which has been linked to cancer development and spread.

    • All patients who have had a heart attack are typically treated using beta blockers. According to a recent study, this drug is unlikely to be needed for those heart patients who have a normal pumping ability. Now a sub-study shows that there is also a risk that these patients will become depressed by the treatment.
