Dear readers,

How about starting 2025 with a plan to add 48 minutes a day to your lifespan? In a fascinating study, plant-based diets can do that, while a hot dog a day shaves off 36 minutes of your life each day! Worth reviewing. The U.S. Surgeon General published an advisory suggesting warning labels on alcohol bottles to indicate a cancer risk. Thoughts?

New research emphasizes the importance of the ‘endothelial glycocalyx (EG)’ for healthy organ function. Green seaweed can build up the EG. A baseline and follow-up non-contrast coronary calcium CT scan can measure the progression of calcification. A randomized trial demonstrates that plant-based diets improve lipid and glycemic markers compared to the control.

A massive study in the VA health system indicates that <1% of patients were tested for Lipoprotein(a) cholesterol. This must improve. Cardiac MRI can measure epicardial fat mass, which is pro-inflammatory and may promote cardiac events. Finally, one that is sure to trigger a response. The environmental impact of animal farming for pet food production is huge, and an analysis indicates the favorable effects of switching to vegan pet food. My dogs love grains like quinoa and vegetables.

Be well,
