Fasting Mimicking Diets Promote Kidney Health

Dear readers,

Since the introduction of the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD as Prolon), many clinical trials have demonstrated benefits. Now, a new pilot study using a lower-salt FMD identifies the reversal of renal pathologies. In a new study, sudden cardiac death post-MI could not be predicted. Therefore, preventing heart attacks must be the current primary goal. Covid in sperm? I thought it stayed in the arm. Apparently not. Lipoprotein(a) is an important risk for CVD that should be measured in all. The optimal time for surgery post-MI was studied in a new paper. In addition, sleep apnea is underdiagnosed and undertreated, posing a serious risk. A major disappointment in a new trial resulted from data showing that colchicine failed to modify outcomes post-MI. Finally, there is hope for those with leg cramps, as a modest dose of vitamin K2 reduces them. Relief is on the way!

Be well,

Joel Kahn, MD, FACC

    • Laura Perin, Ph.D., Co-Director of the GOFARR Laboratory at The Saban Research Institute of Children's Hospital Los Angeles, along with Valter Longo, Ph.D., Professor at USC Longevity Institute of the Davis School of Gerontology, and international collaborators conducted a study that is offering promising results.

In the study, they fed animal models with chronic kidney disease a specialized low-salt, fasting-mimicking  (LS-FMD) equivalent to the recommended daily intake for human patients with chronic kidney disease.

The study is published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

    • Hallak et al have found that intact SARS-CoV-2 virions can “hide” in a population of sperm for months after COVID-19 infection. A study of 13 patients admitted to the Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, with moderate to severe COVID-19 showed that male gametes released extracellular viral traps (in a process called ETosis).

    • The CLEAR SYNERGY (OASIS 9) clinical trial explored both the short- and long-term use of colchicine in patients who undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) after an AMI. From 2018 to 2022, more than 7,000 patients from 14 different countries were randomized within 72 hours of PCI to undergo treatment with colchicine or a placebo.

Overall, after a median follow-up period of three years, the study’s primary endpoint—a composite of cardiovascular death, recurrent myocardial infarction, stroke or ischemia-driven revascularization—was not significantly improved for patients treated with colchicine (9.1%) compared to those treated with the placebo (9.3%).
