Diabetes and Cardiometabolic Health

Dear readers,

The dramatic rise in poor cardiometabolic health and diabetes mellitus has challenged the entire medical system of the USA. This week, new studies focus on cardiovascular health in polycystic ovarian syndrome and ankylosing spondylitis. Additional investigations highlight the implications of gestational diabetes on future cardiovascular disease, the role of oral hygiene on cardiometabolic risk, and the importance of blood pressure control to preserve cognitive functions in diabetes. There is ample trial data to support whole-food plant diets to prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes, but an “unhealthy” plant diet fails to prevent cardiovascular disease. Finally, in patients undergoing cardiac procedures, the higher the hemoglobin A1c, the greater the adverse outcomes in follow-up. We have a lot of work to do.

Be well,

Joel Kahn, MD, FACC
