Cardiometabolic Health: The Role of Olive Oil and More

Dear readers,

Optimal cardiometabolic health (CMH) is a conglomeration of measurements including adiposity, blood glucose, blood lipids, blood pressure, and clinical cardiovascular disease. This newsletter highlights new publications on the topic and starts with a randomized human study from a standard diet to a whole food, plant-based diet in 2 versions, high or low in extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO). Both plant diets led to comparable and favorable improvements in markers of CMH in just 4 weeks, with a slight advantage towards the lower EVOO arm.

Next, poor CMH is a predictor of dementia but not everyone has the same risk. A large analysis showed the increased risk of CMH and morbidity in smokers with some surprising findings in those <35 years. Medicinal plants like berberine may be of value for CMH. In addition, poor hand grip as a marker of strength may increase the poor outcomes in those with suboptimal CMH. Another report indicates that clinics dedicated to assessing CMH may be of value. TM may be of value in improving CMH. Finally, genetics are a major contributor to measurements of CMH.

Be well,

Joel Kahn, MD, FACC
