A Metformin RCT: Impressive Benefits

Dear readers,

Although I prefer to feature “natural” approaches to health, not all pharmaceuticals can be discarded. Two papers featuring the impressive benefits of metformin are included, one being an impressive 4-year RCT worth studying. The harms of Ambien are highlighted. The benefits of a calcium CT score of zero are the focus of a review, a test that is mandatory for all my patients in my preventive clinic. Patients fear statins, but a large study finds up to a 63% reduction in dementia with statin use, favoring rosuvastatin. A novel diet, the NiMeTM (Non-industrialized Microbiome Restore) diet, improves gut health and mimics the diet in Papua New Guinea. Finally, a 3-day juice-only diet actually showed detriment to gut health. You have to love your fiber every day, the missing nutrient in the U.S. diet. A lot to chew on here.

Be well,

Joel Kahn, MD, FACC

      • For the first time a new study describes the synchronized oscillations during sleep that power the brain’s glymphatic system to help remove ‘waste’ associated with neurodegenerative diseases, via a mouse model.
      • Researchers also found that a commonly prescribed sleep aid might suppress those oscillations, disrupting the brain’s waste removal during sleep.
      • Looking at all the possible factors that might contribute to potential cognitive decline risk is important, particularly as new research estimates that dementia risk the risk after the age of 55 among Americans has now more than doubled.
